Laceration Repair recovery, day by day

    Day 0 (ER Discharge)

    Critical: Read Your Discharge Papers

    • Review your ER discharge instructions carefully; they contain specific guidance for your condition
    • Keep wound dry for 24-48 hours; then gentle cleaning with soap and water daily
    • Fill prescriptions today; do not wait until pain is severe
    • Have someone available to help at home

    Follow-Up is Essential

    • Schedule follow-up with your primary care doctor or specialist within 2-3 days
    • Sutures/staples need to be removed in 5-14 days (timing depends on location)
    • Return to the ER if symptoms worsen significantly before your follow-up
    • Bring your discharge paperwork to your follow-up appointment
    Day 1-14

    Recovery

    • Apply petroleum jelly and bandage daily; moist wounds heal better
    • Gradually increase activity as tolerated
    • Monitor for signs of infection or worsening condition
    • Attend your follow-up appointment; do not skip it

When to call your provider or 911

    • •Symptoms significantly worse than when you left the ER
    • •Wound reopens, heavy bleeding restarts, or red streaks extend from the wound
    • •Fever above 101.5°F
    • •Unable to keep down fluids or medications
    • •Confusion or altered mental status

When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
