When to Return to the ER

Critical: Read Your Discharge Papers
- Review your ER discharge instructions carefully; they contain specific guidance for your condition
- Keep the splint/cast dry and elevated above heart level
- Fill prescriptions today; do not wait until pain is severe
- Have someone available to help at home
Follow-Up is Essential
- Schedule follow-up with your primary care doctor or specialist within 2-3 days
- Follow up with orthopedics within 5-7 days for re-evaluation
- Return to the ER if symptoms worsen significantly before your follow-up
- Bring your discharge paperwork to your follow-up appointment
Recovery
- Ice above and below the cast/splint; 20 min on, 20 min off
- Gradually increase activity as tolerated
- Monitor for signs of infection or worsening condition
- Attend your follow-up appointment; do not skip it
When to call your provider or 911
- •Symptoms significantly worse than when you left the ER
- •Numbness, tingling, or blue/white color in fingers/toes below the injury
- •Fever above 101.5°F
- •Unable to keep down fluids or medications
- •Confusion or altered mental status
When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
