    When to Return to the ER

    Day 0 (ER Discharge)

    Critical: Read Your Discharge Papers

    • Review your ER discharge instructions carefully; they contain specific guidance for your condition
    • Follow all discharge instructions exactly
    • Fill prescriptions today; do not wait until pain is severe
    • Someone should check on you every 2-4 hours for the first 24 hours

    Follow-Up is Essential

    • Schedule follow-up with your primary care doctor or specialist within 2-3 days
    • Follow up as instructed in your discharge papers
    • Return to the ER if symptoms worsen significantly before your follow-up
    • Bring your discharge paperwork to your follow-up appointment
    Day 1-14

    Recovery

    • Physical and cognitive rest for 24-48 hours; then gradual return to activity
    • Limit screen time, reading, and bright lights initially
    • Monitor for signs of infection or worsening condition
    • Attend your follow-up appointment; do not skip it

    When to call your provider or 911

    • •Symptoms significantly worse than when you left the ER
    • •Worsening headache, repeated vomiting, seizures, or inability to wake
    • •Fever above 101.5°F
    • •Unable to keep down fluids or medications
    • •Confusion or altered mental status

    When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
