What to expect
Why Stretches Matter
- •The body naturally tries to reattach the tissue
- •Consistent stretching ensures the frenum heals in the released position
- •Skipping stretches is the most common reason for re-tightening
Frenectomy (Tongue/Lip Tie) recovery, day by day
After the Procedure
- Minor bleeding and swelling are normal
- Apply ice if swelling is present
- Soft foods only for the rest of the day
Stretching Exercises
- Perform prescribed tongue/lip stretching exercises 4-6 times daily
- Exercises prevent the tissue from reattaching
- This is the most important part of your recovery
- Exercises may be uncomfortable but should not cause sharp pain
Wound Care
- A white or yellowish patch at the site is normal healing (not infection)
- Gentle salt water rinses after meals
- Pain should be manageable with ibuprofen
Healing
- Continue stretching exercises as directed (usually 4-6 weeks total)
- Site should be well healed
- Attend follow-up to assess healing and tongue/lip mobility
Medications you may be given
Ibuprofen 600mg
Take 1 tablet 3 times daily with food
Always follow the exact directions your own provider gives you. This is general information, not a prescription.
When to call your provider or 911
- •Heavy bleeding that won't stop
- •Fever above 101°F
- •Significant swelling that affects breathing or swallowing
- •Signs of infection: increasing redness, pus
When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
