    What to expect

    Implant Healing Timeline

    • •Soft tissue heals in 2-3 weeks
    • •Bone integration takes 3-6 months
    • •Final crown is placed after confirmed osseointegration

    Protect Your Implant

    • •No smoking (dramatically reduces success rate)
    • •Keep the area clean to prevent peri-implantitis
    • •Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth

    Dental Implant recovery, day by day

    Day 0 (Implant Day)

    Bleeding

    • Bite on gauze for 30-60 minutes
    • Some bleeding and oozing is normal for 24 hours
    • Use a cold tea bag pressed on the site if bleeding persists

    Swelling & Ice

    • Apply ice immediately: 20 min on, 20 min off
    • Swelling peaks at 48-72 hours
    • Sleep with head elevated

    Diet

    • Soft, cool foods only
    • Do NOT chew near the implant site
    • Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol
    Day 1-7 (Initial Healing)

    Oral Hygiene

    • Do NOT brush directly on the implant site for 1 week
    • Gentle salt water rinses starting day 2
    • Use prescribed antibacterial rinse if given

    Activity

    • No strenuous exercise for 5-7 days
    • No bending over or heavy lifting
    • Avoid blowing your nose forcefully (especially for upper implants)

    Follow-up

    • Post-op check usually at 7-10 days
    • Sutures may be removed at this visit
    Week 2-6 (Soft Tissue Healing)

    Recovery

    • Soft tissue should be well healed
    • Gradually resume normal diet, still avoiding very hard foods on the implant
    • Continue excellent oral hygiene around the implant
    Week 7-18 (Osseointegration)

    Bone Integration

    • The implant is fusing with your jawbone (osseointegration)
    • This process takes 3-6 months
    • Do NOT try to wiggle or test the implant
    • Your dentist will verify integration before placing the crown

    Medications you may be given

    Ibuprofen 600mg

    Take 1 tablet 3 times daily with food

    Amoxicillin 500mg

    Take 1 capsule 3 times daily until finished

    Chlorhexidine Rinse 0.12%

    Rinse with 15mL for 30 seconds twice daily. Do not swallow.

    When to call your provider or 911

    • •Fever above 101°F that doesn't respond to medication
    • •Uncontrolled bleeding lasting more than 4 hours despite gauze pressure
    • •Severe pain not relieved by prescribed medication
    • •Difficulty breathing or swallowing
    • •Numbness that persists beyond 24 hours
    • •Foul taste/odor indicating possible infection
    • •Pus or discharge from the surgical site
    • •Implant feels loose or moves when touched
    • •Persistent numbness after 24 hours
    • •Implant site has foul-smelling discharge

    When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.

      Oozing should stop within 24 hours

    2. Day 7

      Post-op check

      Sutures may be removed at this visit

    3. Day 42

      Soft tissue typically healed

      Gums around the implant should be well healed

    4. Day 120

      Osseointegration expected

      Implant has fused with jawbone and is ready for crown placement
