What to expect
What Are Sealants?
- •Thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth
- •They fill in the natural grooves where cavities most often start
- •No drilling and no anesthesia needed
Dental Sealant recovery, day by day
Day 0 (Sealant Day)
Immediate Care
- No numbness; your child can eat and drink right away
- Sealants harden immediately under the curing light
- Avoid sticky or chewy candy for 24 hours (gummy bears, taffy, Starburst)
Day 1-1
Monitoring
- Check that the bite feels normal; call if something feels high
- Sealants are smooth, tooth-colored coatings on the chewing surfaces
- Brush normally; sealants protect the grooves but not between teeth
- Sealants last 5-10 years; checked at each dental visit
When to call your provider or 911
- •Sealant chips off or feels rough/sharp
- •Pain when biting (sealant may be too high)
When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
