What to expect
Activity Restrictions
- •No activity restrictions. Return to work, exercise, and normal routines immediately
- •If fluoride varnish is visible as a thin yellow film, leave it in place overnight for maximum effect

Day 0 (Cleaning Day)
After the Cleaning
- Mild gum tenderness and pinpoint bleeding from flossed areas is normal for 24 hours
- Teeth may feel slicker or slightly sensitive to cold for 1 to 3 days
- If fluoride varnish was applied, avoid brushing, flossing, or eating hard or sticky foods for 4 to 6 hours
- If fluoride foam or gel was used, avoid eating, drinking, or rinsing for 30 minutes
Diet
- Choose soft, room temperature foods for the first 24 hours if gums are sore
- Avoid very hot foods and drinks for 2 hours after fluoride application
- Avoid red wine, coffee, tea, and berries for 24 hours if staining is a concern after polishing
- Drink water to keep the mouth hydrated
Day 1 to 1
Resume Normal Hygiene
- Brush twice daily for 2 minutes with a fluoride toothpaste
- Floss once daily. Go slightly below the gumline on each tooth
- Any residual cold sensitivity should resolve within 72 hours
- Schedule your next cleaning in 6 months unless your dentist recommends a shorter interval
When to call your provider or 911
- •Bleeding from the gums that continues past 48 hours
- •Sharp tooth pain that does not resolve within 3 days or worsens
- •Swollen, hot, or pus-filled gums
- •Fever above 101 degrees F (38.3 degrees C)
When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
