What to expect
Bone Graft Healing
- •Bone regeneration is a slow process (3-6 months)
- •The graft provides scaffolding for your body to grow new bone
- •Smoking reduces graft success by up to 50%
Bone Graft (Dental) recovery, day by day
Bleeding & Protection
- Bite on gauze for 30-60 minutes
- Some small granules of bone graft material may come out; this is normal in small amounts
- Do NOT spit, use straws, or rinse forcefully for 24 hours
Swelling & Pain
- Ice packs: 20 min on, 20 min off for 48 hours
- Take prescribed pain medication before numbness wears off
- Sleep with head elevated on 2-3 pillows
Critical Healing Period
- Do NOT put any pressure on the graft site
- Soft foods only; chew on the opposite side
- No brushing at the graft site for 2 weeks
- Gentle salt water rinses starting day 2
Activity
- No strenuous exercise for 7-10 days
- No smoking (dramatically reduces graft success)
- Avoid blowing your nose forcefully (upper jaw grafts)
Bone Integration
- The graft integrates with your natural bone over 3-6 months
- Follow-up X-rays will monitor bone growth
- Do not schedule implant placement until bone is mature
- Continue excellent oral hygiene
When to call your provider or 911
- •Fever above 101°F that doesn't respond to medication
- •Uncontrolled bleeding lasting more than 4 hours despite gauze pressure
- •Severe pain not relieved by prescribed medication
- •Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- •Numbness that persists beyond 24 hours
- •Foul taste/odor indicating possible infection
- •Pus or discharge from the surgical site
- •Large amounts of graft material coming out
- •Graft membrane becomes exposed
When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
