What to expect
When to Contact Us
- •Lethargy lasting more than 24 hours after surgery
- •Refusal to eat for more than 24 hours
- •Vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than 12 hours
- •Incision looks red, swollen, or has discharge
Wellness Checkup recovery, day by day
Post-Anesthesia
- Your pet may be groggy and unsteady for 12-24 hours
- Keep them in a quiet, warm, confined area with non-slip surfaces
- Offer small amounts of water 2-3 hours after surgery
- Light meal in the evening if alert and interested
E-Collar / Cone
- E-collar on if incision was made
- Do not let your pet lick, chew, or scratch the surgical site
Activity Restriction
- Leash walks only for bathroom breaks
- No running, jumping, rough play, or stairs
- Keep away from other pets who may play-wrestle
Incision Monitoring
- Check the incision twice daily
- Mild redness and slight swelling is normal for 2-3 days
- Report: excessive swelling, discharge, bleeding, or opening of incision
Healing
- Incision should look better each day
- Continue activity restrictions
- Appetite and energy should be fully normal by now
Recovery wraps up
- Suture removal at 10-14 days (if non-dissolvable)
- Gradually return to normal activity after sutures are removed
- Monitor for any late complications
When to call your provider or 911
- •Excessive bleeding from the incision that doesn't stop
- •Incision opens, separates, or has pus/foul odor
- •Your pet is extremely lethargic or unresponsive
- •Persistent vomiting or diarrhea for more than 12 hours
- •Difficulty breathing or blue/pale gums
- •Refusal to eat or drink for more than 24 hours after surgery
- •Collapse or inability to stand
When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.

Verify incision is healing cleanly

Suture removal
Return for suture removal (if non-dissolvable)
