What to expect
Hydration is Key
- •Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily
- •Adequate hydration prevents clots, flushes the system, and promotes healing
- •Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated drinks initially
Not Sterile Yet
- •A semen analysis at ~3 months is REQUIRED before relying on the vasectomy
- •Continue using other contraception until confirmed sterile
- •The test checks for zero sperm count

Immediate Care
- Apply ice to the scrotum: 20 min on, 20 min off for the first 48 hours
- Wear snug, supportive underwear (briefs, not boxers) for 1-2 weeks
- Rest for the remainder of the day
- Drink plenty of fluids (8-10 glasses of water daily) to flush the urinary system
Activity
- No heavy lifting, straining, or vigorous activity for 1 week
- No sexual activity for 1 week
- No driving while on prescription pain medication
- Short walks are encouraged to prevent blood clots
Urinary Symptoms
- Some burning with urination is normal and should improve daily
- Blood in urine may come and go; increase fluids if you notice blood
- Drink enough to keep urine pale yellow
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol (bladder irritants) for 1-2 weeks
Wound / Site Care
- Small incisions may have steri-strips or dissolving stitches; leave them alone
- Shower is usually OK after 24-48 hours; no baths or submerging for 2 weeks
- Mild bruising and swelling of the scrotum is normal for 1-2 weeks
Recovery & Follow-Up
- You are NOT sterile yet. Use alternative contraception until cleared by semen analysis (usually 3 months / 20 ejaculations)
- Gradually resume normal activities
- Attend follow-up appointment
- Report any new or worsening symptoms
When to call your provider or 911
- •Inability to urinate for more than 8 hours
- •Heavy bleeding (bright red urine with clots)
- •Fever above 101.5°F
- •Severe pain not controlled by medication
- •Scrotal swelling the size of a grapefruit or larger
- •Increasing abdominal distension
When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
