What to expect
Compression is Key
- •Wear compression stockings as directed
- •They reduce bruising, prevent blood pooling, and improve results
- •Remove only to shower (once cleared)
Sclerotherapy recovery, day by day
Immediate Care
- Wear compression stockings as directed (usually 24/7 for 1-2 weeks)
- Walk for 15-30 minutes immediately after the procedure
- Some bruising and soreness at the site is expected
- Take medications as prescribed
Activity
- Walking is encouraged; avoid standing still or sitting for long periods
- Elevate legs when resting (above heart level if possible)
- No hot baths, saunas, or hot tubs for 2-4 weeks
- No crossing legs while seated (restricts blood flow)
Recovery
- Bruising along the treated vein is normal and resolves over 2-4 weeks
- Continue wearing compression stockings as directed
- Gradual return to normal activities
- Take prescribed blood thinners or aspirin as directed (do NOT miss doses)
Ongoing Care
- Resume normal activities as tolerated
- Attend all follow-up appointments and vascular imaging
- Report any new symptoms in the affected limb
- Lifelong healthy habits: no smoking, regular exercise, balanced diet
When to call your provider or 911
- •Sudden severe leg swelling or pain (possible DVT)
- •Sudden severe headache, vision loss, or slurred speech (stroke symptoms)
- •Wound opens or starts bleeding heavily
- •Fever above 101.5°F
- •Rapid swelling or expanding bruise at the procedure site
- •Chest pain or shortness of breath
When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
