Day 0 (Biopsy Day)
Bleeding
- Apply firm pressure with gauze for 20-30 minutes
- Some oozing is normal for several hours
- Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using straws for 24 hours
Site Care
- If stitches were placed, they typically dissolve in 7-10 days
- Avoid touching the biopsy site with your tongue or fingers
- No smoking for at least 48-72 hours
Pain & Diet
- Mild soreness is expected; OTC pain medication usually sufficient
- Soft foods, chew on the opposite side
- Avoid hot, spicy, and acidic foods
Day 1-5
Healing
- Begin gentle warm salt water rinses after 24 hours
- Soreness should improve each day
- A white or yellowish film over the site is normal healing tissue
Results
- Biopsy results typically take 7-14 business days
- Your dentist's office will contact you when results arrive
- Try not to worry; many biopsies come back benign
Day 6-30
Full Healing
- The biopsy site should be nearly or fully healed
- If stitches haven't dissolved, they may need removal
- Follow up as directed to discuss biopsy results and next steps
When to call your provider or 911
- •Bleeding that won't stop after 30+ minutes of firm pressure
- •Increasing swelling or pain after the first 48 hours
- •Fever above 101°F
- •Pus or foul-smelling drainage from the biopsy site
- •Numbness that persists beyond 24 hours
When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
