    Typical recovery: about 14 daysENT

    What to expect

    Hydration is Critical

    • Dehydration is the #1 cause of ER visits after tonsillectomy
    • Drink constantly, even when it hurts
    • Pain is worst days 3-7, then gradually improves

    Laryngoscopy recovery, day by day

    Day 0 (Procedure Day)

    Immediate Aftercare

    • Throat pain is expected; begin ice chips and cold fluids immediately
    • Take pain medication before numbness or anesthesia fully wears off
    • Keep head elevated at 30-45 degrees (2-3 pillows) to reduce swelling
    • Rest for the remainder of the day

    Activity & Diet

    • Cool, soft foods: ice cream, popsicles, smoothies, lukewarm broth
    • Avoid red or brown foods/drinks (hard to distinguish from bleeding)
    • No heavy lifting (>10 lbs) for 2 weeks
    • Stay well hydrated
    Day 1-7

    Recovery Expectations

    • Pain often WORSENS days 3-7 as scabs form; this is normal
    • Stay hydrated even when swallowing is painful; dehydration worsens pain
    • Take all medications on schedule, not just when pain is severe
    • Ice packs on the outside can help with swelling

    Wound Care

    • White/gray patches in the throat are normal healing scabs, NOT infection
    • Do not swim, submerge in water, or use hot tubs
    • Avoid straining and heavy lifting
    Day 8-14

    Continued Healing

    • Scabs fall off around day 7-10; minor bleeding can occur
    • Attend all follow-up appointments
    • Full healing typically takes several weeks
    • Resume normal diet and activity as comfort allows

When to call your provider or 911

    • Fever above 101.5°F (38.6°C) that doesn't respond to medication
    • Uncontrolled bleeding that doesn't stop with pressure
    • Severe pain not managed by prescribed medication
    • Signs of allergic reaction: hives, swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing
    • Chest pain, shortness of breath, or rapid heartbeat
    • Redness, warmth, or pus at the incision site (signs of infection)
    • Sudden increase in swelling or pain after initial improvement
    • Numbness or tingling that worsens
    • Bright red bleeding from the mouth or nose (even small amounts after day 1)
    • Unable to swallow liquids or saliva
    • High fever above 101.5°F

When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
