    What to expect

    Wound Healing Principles

    • •Moist wound healing is faster than dry
    • •Proper nutrition is essential; malnutrition dramatically slows healing
    • •Manage diabetes, vascular disease, and other underlying conditions

Wound Debridement recovery, day by day

    Day 0 (Treatment Day)

    Wound Management

    • Keep wound dressing in place until your next scheduled change
    • Keep the wound and surrounding area clean
    • Elevate the wound above heart level when possible
    • Take all medications as prescribed (antibiotics, pain medication)

    Nutrition for Healing

    • Wound healing requires extra protein and calories
    • Aim for 1.2-1.5g protein per kg of body weight daily
    • Vitamin C and zinc support wound healing (supplement if directed)
    • Stay well hydrated
    Day 1-30

    Ongoing Wound Care

    • Change dressings as instructed (every 1-3 days depending on wound type)
    • Document wound appearance: size, color, drainage, odor at each change
    • Protect wound from trauma and contamination
    • Attend all wound care appointments; healing must be monitored closely

When to call your provider or 911

    • •Wound becomes significantly more painful, red, or swollen
    • •New or increased foul-smelling drainage
    • •Red streaks extending from the wound (spreading infection)
    • •Fever above 101°F
    • •Wound size is increasing instead of decreasing
    • •Heavy bleeding from the wound

When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
