    What to expect

    When to Call Your Oncology Team

    • Fever above 100.4°F (even if you feel fine)
    • This could indicate a serious infection called neutropenic fever
    • Go to the ER if you cannot reach your oncologist

    CAR-T Cell Therapy recovery, day by day

    Day 0 (Treatment Day)

    After Infusion

    • Nausea may begin 2-6 hours after treatment; take anti-nausea meds on schedule, NOT after nausea starts
    • Fatigue is the most common side effect; rest as needed
    • Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water to help flush the drugs
    • Have someone available to help at home

    Infection Prevention

    • Your immune system will be weakened; avoid crowds and sick people
    • Wash hands frequently with soap and water
    • Do NOT eat raw or undercooked meat, fish, or eggs
    • Blood counts typically drop 7-14 days after treatment (nadir)
    Day 1-14

    Managing Side Effects

    • Take anti-nausea medication on schedule, even if you feel fine
    • Mouth sores: rinse with baking soda/salt solution 4-6 times daily
    • Constipation is common; use prescribed stool softeners and stay hydrated
    • Report any new or worsening symptoms to your oncology team immediately
    Day 15-21

    Recovery & Monitoring

    • Blood counts should be recovering; your oncologist will check labs
    • Gradual return to normal activities as energy allows
    • Nutrition: focus on protein and calories for tissue repair
    • Attend all scheduled follow-ups and labs

    When to call your provider or 911

    • Fever above 100.4°F (neutropenic fever is a medical emergency)
    • Severe nausea/vomiting that prevents keeping down fluids for 24 hours
    • Unusual bleeding or bruising (low platelets)
    • Severe shortness of breath
    • Sudden confusion or mental status changes
    • Mouth sores so severe you cannot eat or drink

    When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
